<p>The article examines the activities of dragomans and secretaries who served in the Russian mission in Constantinople in the eighteenth century. Their principal efforts were aimed at advancing Russian interests in the Ottoman Empire and focused on diplomatic and intelligence objectives, protocol, translation and clerical functions, and matters of record-keeping and document management. Among the earliest dragomans and secretaries were Orthodox subjects of the Sultan who assisted ambassadors and envoys in carrying out their duties and facilitated communication with their counterparts from foreign states, official representatives of the Topkapı Palace and the Sublime Porte. Dragomans and secretaries also assisted in collecting confidential documents and obtaining information from informants and agents concerning the internal and foreign policies of the Ottoman Empire and its relations with foreign states.</p>
<kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>secretary</kwd><kwd>N.V.
